I Got “Top Story” Twice On Vocal
But the stats are kinda disappointing
Today, I checked my Vocal stats to see that I received a bonus of $5 for a “top story”. On top of a nice bonus, my story also got featured on the homepage. Yay.
Seeing this spread a smile across my face.
“I did it!” I thought as I jumped out of my chair to tell my family.
It has always been a dream to be featured. Anywhere. Just to know my writing was being noticed and appreciated. Especially after spending countless hours writing, it is just good to know that the team behind a platform “handpicked” my story to be featured.
So since my story is a top performer, you probably are curious about the stats. And I hate to disappoint you but they are, well, disappointing.
My first thought after being featured on the homepage was, “This should bring in a grand, maybe more.”
But when I checked my wallet, I saw this:

I don’t need to explain which ones are the top performers. But then again, the top performers are a mere 20-70 views max.
Now, I hate to sound ungrateful because 70 is a lot of views. Each one is a person that took the time to click and read the story. I appreciate every single one.
Still, I can’t help feeling that the number is small compared to how big I thought the platform was. Were people just not interested? Or is this platform smaller than I thought?
Vocal doesn’t offer stats on other creators' stories. So I am not able to check if this is the normal performance of a “top story”. I am left wondering if other creators are receiving a maximum of only a hundred views.
I guess the $5 is to make up for the small amount of money received from a top story. I’m happy about this and can’t complain much because I am now $5 richer.
I will continue to write and try to expand my story topics. These last two “top stories” were about video games and they were the only ones to do well in two months of writing on Vocal. So I’ll continue to write about games and see where that gets me.
Quick tip for those wanting to join Vocal: It is a less professional writing space, so a lot of people aren’t interested in all the super-serious stuff. Let loose and have fun when writing.
